In 2011, the seminar group debates how the notion of the declassifiying class in the young Marx is critically reconsidered in post-Marxism in divergent ways serving as point of departure for philosophical rereadings of Marx that bypass the economico-theoretical lines of his thought, and lead to a certain Marx without Marxism.
One of the key criticisms raised in these readings is that the young Marx negates politics by presenting it as an anthro-ontological and dialectical automatism: the young Marx conceptualises the proletariat as an universal class that possesses the ontological privilege to dissolve the old society and itself in the process of unfolding its productive social forces. He, thus, defines revolution as the single imminent moment wherein the radical disappropriation of the proletariat is converted into complete appropriation, the nothing of the worker converted into the everything of wealth, negativity into all-sided activity.
The antinomies immanent to this notion of class have instigated, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, readings of Marx that center around non-Marxian and non economico-theoretical concepts, in particular around Spinoza's notion of conatus, Nietzsche's notion of becoming, Sorel's notion of class separation, Bataille's notion of unemployed negativity, and Heidegger’s idea of the abandonment of Being as relation that proceeds from the disjunction of its terms.
Though these readings reject the ontological kernel characterising the notion of the declassifying class in the young Marx, they themselves establish no less ontological conceptualisations of politics that are characterised by radically different philosophemes.
The seminar group debates the philosophemes that are used in the heretical reconsiderations of the idea of the declassifying class in post-Marxism, and critically discusses the corresponding return to ontology. Primarily, it focusses on the differences between post-Althusserian, post-workerist and Left-Heideggerian notions of class and Deleuze and Guattari's concept of being out of class. Ultimately, in the seminar the question will be raised, wether and how class struggle is a concept, by which politics can be thought today.
The seminar starts by discussing two texts of Balibar from the early 1980s, in which he reads Marx through the paradoxes of his notion of proletariat.
