Against the backdrop of Deleuze and Guattari's comment on class in "Anti-Oedipus" where they put forward the thesis that the concept of class has been invented along the process of normalising and administering proletarian struggles, we will turn to a discussion of Lenin's idea of class struggle. In recent years, Zizek, Badiou et.al. have attempted at reviving elements of Leninism while simultaneously making a multiple wager, especially the polemical identification of minoritarian politics with its failure and the theoretical actualisation of the Althusserian themes of Leninist politics (decisively grasping the right moment, destroying the State apparatus). While Badiou disassociated himself from party politics as being contaminated by the logic of the State and substituted the idea of keeping a distance to the State for the destruction of the State apparatus, Lars T. Lih came up with a new reading of Lenin's idea of class politics in his 2005 book Lenin rediscovered.
As for Deleuze and Guattari's critique of Leninism, he suggests to read the chapter "Causality, Subjectivity and History" in Guattari's Molecular Revolution against the theses of which he will bring forward his understanding of Lenin's politics.
Lenin, he states, wrote What Is to Be Done? at top-speed in late 1901 and early 1902—years filled with dramatic events that foreshadowed the Russian revolution of 1905. Beneath the polemics, Lenin’s book reflects this drama and offers an enthusiastic, indeed romantic view of the galvanizing effect of the workers’ struggle against the tsar on all of Russian society. Lenin assigned the Social Democratic underground a heroic mission in leading this struggle against the tsar. His vision of the underground was opposed in spirit to the conspiratorial underground of an earlier generation of Russian revolutionaries. Indeed, his concrete proposals arose from the collective experience of his own generation of underground activists, and as such were accepted by all factions in the Social Democratic party. These features of What Is to Be Done? force us to look critically at the accepted story that Lenin’s book was the major cause of the split in 1903-4 between Bolsheviks and Mensheviks.
