During our last meeting, we have discussed Moishe Postone's assumption that Marx rejects any simple dualism of positive use-matter and negative exchange-form of labour in which the right content could be saved while the false form would have to be abolished. Controversely, Derrida assumes that in Marx writings an ideal distinction between use and exchange is operative whose purity is not guaranteed. For Derrida, there is no use-value which the possibility of exchange and commerce has not in advance inscribed in an out-of-use, an excess that cannot be reduced to the useless. As in the early Baudrillard, we will find in Derrida's reading of Marx a reference to Bataille's idea of unproductive expenditure and inoperative negativity.
In the chapter of "Specters of Marx," we are going to discuss, Derrida questions what Marx presents as secret of the commodity form: the abstract object-ness of value which is as real as it is spectral, and that contains the impersonal form of capitalist domination:
"Here it is a definite social relation between men, that assumes, in their eyes, the fantastic form of a relation between things. In order, therefore, to find an analogy, we must have recourse to the mist-enveloped regions of the religious world." (Marx, Capital, Vol. 1)
Derrida rejects the distinction between social spectralization and social transparency that is to be found in the chapter "The fetishism of commodities and the secret thereof" in the first volume of "Capital". Derrida's thesis is that Marx develops, in opposition to the spectral realm of the commodity fetish, a critical ontology of presence as actual reality, pure use and objectivity: A chair is for sitting; it is what it is; identical with itself. Because there is nothing like the real reality of things and the simple rationality of use and production, the ontological and the critical are, according to Derrida, pre-deconstructive in Marx.
