In 1871 Marx recognized in the defeated attempt of the Paris Communards the first working-class government, that had been only in the need of a stronger force of organisation. For the developing socialist parties he worked out a new concept of the dictatorship of the proletariat as the removing of the State apparatus in a transitional phase. In the seminar Lenin's concept of socialist transition will be discussed, his affirmation of the councils as organs of insurrection, and Luxemburg's simultaneous critique of the marginalization of the democratic mass organisations within the revolutionary process of 1917. Focus of the debate will be the relation of violence and law, the concept of power in Marxist State theory, that poststructuralist theorists have criticized since the 1960s, the destructive effects of violence in the period of war communism, and the reductive construction of an opposition between party and class, leadership and spontaneity, avantguarde and masses. To get a clue of the debate between Luxemburg and Lenin, I recommend the chapter on the relation of spontaneity and organisation in Raya Dunayevskaya's book: "Rosa Luxemburg. Women's Liberation, and Marx's Philosophy of Revolution" from 1982.
